This lovely two-story cottage was built in 1995, and has a large porch with rocking chairs across the front porch, overlooking a lovely pond, where guests can fish. Sometimes, Henry the graceful egret, graces us with his presence at this pond in the early hours of the morning or late afternoon. There is also a large deck across the back of the cottage with period wrought iron garden furniture where one can relax while reading and amidst the tranquility of the wooded area at the rear of the cottage.

James Scott, an English nobleman, was the 1st Duke of Monmouth and the 1st Duke of Buccleuch, and lived from April 9, 1649-July 15, 1685. Originally, he was called James Crofts or James Fitzroy, and was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.  He was the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II of England and his mistress, Lucy Walter.  In 1685, he led the unsuccessful Monmouth Rebellion, an attempt to depose his uncle, King James II.  Declaring himself the legitimate King, Monmouth attempted to capitalize on his position as the son of Charles II and his Protestantism, in opposition to James, who was a Roman Catholic. The rebellion failed, and Monmouth was beheaded for treason on July 15, 1685.

John James Audubon, the famous artist, visited Natchez in the 1820’s and stated that Natchez Under-The-Hill “formed a medley which it is beyond my power to describe.”  Audubon is known to have been in the Natchez area in early 1822, and in May of that year taught drawing at Elizabeth Female Academy (today known as Jefferson College) in Washington, Mississippi. He hiked back and forth each day along the Natchez Trace from Natchez to the academy.
